ABOUT FISTULA

According to the Fistula Foundation’s website:

An obstetric fistula occurs when a mother has a prolonged, obstructed labor, but doesn’t have access to emergency medical care, such as a C-section. She often labors in excruciating pain for days. Tragically, her baby usually dies.

During her prolonged labor, the mother’s contractions continually push the baby’s head against her pelvis. Soft tissues caught between the baby’s head and her pelvic bone become compressed, restricting the normal flow of blood.

Without adequate blood supply, sections of tissue soon die, leaving holes—known as “fistulae” —between the mother’s vagina and her bladder or rectum. It is these holes that cause incontinence. If untreated, the woman will uncontrollably leak urine, stool, or sometimes both, for the rest of her life.

Often, this results in her being shunned and outcast by her community, with very little hope of employment or community.

ABOUT THE FISTULA FOUNDATION

In wealthy, western nations, fistula is often avoided entirely because of the emergency medical care available to women in labor. But in places where this type of emergency care is unavailable, their babies often die, and they are left dealing with infection, pain, and isolation. Fistula is easily cured with a simple surgical procedure.

The average cost of this life-changing surgery is just $586.

About the Dignity Restoration Project

We want to offer surgery to 2000 young women in need of fistula reparation through song.

Marie-france MacDonald has written a song called You Are Not Alone. Singers all over the world are invited to record and submit their version of the song to Play It Forward, which will make it available to download for just .99 cents — and all funds will go directly to the Fistula Foundation.

How it works:

  1. Listen to Marie’s version of the song and download her sheet music.

  2. Record your version of the song. It can be a simple arrangement or extravagant — a Capella or with a full band. Your choice!

  3. Upload your recording to Play It Forward, and select the Fistula Foundation as the recipient of your funds.

  4. Share your recording with all your friends and family! Encourage them to download the song (that’s how donations to the Fistula Foundation actually happen!).

  5. Email us your recording — either a video of you performing your song, or an MP3 and a headshot of you — and a link to your Play It Forward page, so we can help shine a spotlight on you! (We’ll share on social media and on our website.) Be sure to complete the form below to let us know you’ll be participating, even if you’re not ready to send us your recording yet!
